It’s inevitable. The days are becoming shorter and the nights are getting longer. Daylight Savings Time is on Sunday, November 1st and before you know it your morning walks before work may be in darkness. The good news is that you may still be able to witness some great sunrises!
9 Tips on How to Stay Safe and Be Seen:
- Assume drivers can’t see you. Have a defensive strategy. Remember drivers are looking for other cars not necessarily looking for pedestrians or bikes.
- Walk or Run facing traffic. Use the sidewalks when available.
- Bicycles should flow with traffic. Use designated bike lanes when available.
- Wearable Lighting: there are many products available to help illuminate your body. Choose from LED lights so that Drivers see you coming. Blinking lights on your back help others see you from behind. Belts, wristbands, arm bands, ankle bands, lace lights, heel spur lights, and headlamps can be a good idea.
- Don’t use earphones! I realize that music can help you keep your pace and make your workout enjoyable. With limited visibility, you need to use your other senses. Listen for traffic or other dangers.
- Beware of high-risk areas. Use caution when approaching intersections, hills, entrances and exits to commercial properties, and driveways.
- Be friendly and use your WAVE! When approaching a vehicle acknowledge drivers and watch for them to acknowledge you!
- Reflective Clothing: Many garments have reflective designs on them. When the headlights from a car are in your direction these designs can help a driver see you. Tops, bottoms, hats, vests, headbands, gloves, and shoes can be designed with reflective materials. Pet leashes now come with reflective materials as well. At the very least wear bright neon colors or add a reflective vest over your top or your coat.
- Make sure that YOU can SEE! A headlamp is a great way to get a proper view of the terrain ahead of you and keep you safe from tripping or falling. The higher the Lumens, the farther you’ll be able to see.
Remember it’s always a good idea to check your local ordinances regarding your responsibilities as a pedestrian and a cyclist.
