Snowshoe 101

December 15, 2016 by Kim Larsen Filed Under: Fashion, Fitness

Got Snow? Get Snowshoeing!

Take advantage of the beautiful Midwest scenery and snowshoe our area trails. Snowshoeing is a wonderful way to exercise and enjoy the outdoors with the entire family.

Considerations

Snowshoes made of plastic are usually less expensive than those made of lighter weight and more durable aluminum. Look for bindings that are easy to get in and out of and that will keep your boot securely in place. Also, consider the type of trails you will be using and whether you will be walking or running!

SizingSnowshoe Size Chart

There are women’s and men’s sizing in snowshoes. Your snowshoe size is determined by your weight (usually wearing gear). Most shoes will have a sizing chart tag on them.  You may find that you are between sizes on the sizing chart. For example, if you are a 130-pound woman you will notice from the size chart that you could use a 21″ or a 25″ snowshoe. To help you decide, your second consideration could be the type of trails you plan to use. If the trails are usually well groomed then opt for the smaller size. If the trails are less groomed, powdery, or you’re blazing your own trail, you should opt for the larger snowshoe size. The larger size will help you stay on top of the snow as it will cover more surface area. Children’s sizes are also available.

What Should You Wear on Your Feet?
Insulated hiking boots work great. Look for waterproof brands and remember not to wear boots that are too small! Ideally, you should allow extra room in the boot to prevent rubbing and blisters. The extra airspace will also act as an insulator! Wear thicker socks made of wool or synthetic to keep your feet dry and warm. No cotton socks!
