Staying Warm During Winter Workouts
No longer do you need to bundle up and look like the Michelin man to stay warm. Fabric technology has come a long way giving us lighter weight fabrics with moisture wicking and anti-microbial capabilities. That being said, layering for winter workouts can be a confusing. You need to consider several variables. What activity are you going to be participating in? Are you the person that tends to always be cold? Will you be starting and stopping several times within your workout? There are so many opportunities to be chilled or overheat. The most important garment you will wear will be your base layer. The base layer is the layer that is next to your skin. Remember base layer, base layer, base layer. Did I mention the base layer? It’s important:)
Consider the Three W’s When Layering:
- Wicking: Fabric technology is wonderful. Make sure that your base layer is made of wicking material. You want the moisture from your skin to wick to the outside of the fabric and away from your body. If you don’t, your body may become cold and damp which is never fun. Once you’re chilled it won’t matter how many layers you have on you’ll find it difficult to warm up. Base layers can be made of merino wool or synthetic materials. Your base layer should not be cotton.
- Warmth: Your second layer or middle layer should be geared toward warmth and insulating your body. Wool, down, or fleece can be good options and will help retain the heat generated by your body.
- Weather: Your shell or outer layer should be suited for the elements. What is the weather outside? Is it raining or snowing? Is it windy or extremely cold?
If you take all of the variables into consideration along with the three W’s, you should be on your way to a comfortable winter workout. You can have as few or as many layers as you see fit for your body, the activity you’re doing, and the temperature. And of course, use a good base layer!
