A Buffet of Your Dreams
On a recent trip to Thailand I had the opportunity to stay at the historic Centara Grand Resort on the beach of Hua Hin. Included in my stay was the morning buffet. I’m not a fan of buffets but when you’re traveling it’s a great way to try local foods. On the other hand, I also know that buffets can be a recipe for disaster for your waistline! I soon learned this was not a typical buffet, not only was the presentation beautiful but it included a variety of foods. Fresh local fruits, yogurts, and almost anything you could ever want that was truly healthy. You could even spoon honey directly from the honeycomb. How fresh is that? As everyone knows nutrition is all about making good choices. I started every morning with the yogurts and fruits, or a freshly made smoothie but I have to admit that on one particular morning half of my plate was filled with healthy fruits and the other half consisted of warm bread pudding drizzled in syrup. I couldn’t resist trying it. And there it goes, the you only live once attitude that we find ourselves in on vacation. This is why keeping up with your workout routine while traveling is important and it definitely can be a balancing act.
Taking advantage of the Resort’s Fitness Centre
I always check out the fitness facilities when I travel so I know what equipment is available. The Centara Grand Resort offered a well equipped fitness center that included treadmills, elliptical machines, free weights and really everything you would need. The best part is that the Fitness Centre also offered free classes including yogilates, running, water classes in the pool, and meditation on the beach to name a few.
The first class I took advantage of was a mediation class on the beach with Natalia. I realized this class probably wasn’t going to burn a ton of calories but in a land of calm and peace I thought this would be interesting. I’ve attended mediation classes before but this was a bit different than what I expected and I’ll need to explain that in another post. It was a great way to start a day before venturing out to experience the city.
Another morning I joined a running group on the beach. Lucky for me I was the only attending that day so I had the trainer Josip to myself as we ran barefoot on the beach of Hua Hin. Running on a beautiful beach while passing monks on their morning walks, having great conversation and learning about the city – what a wonderful way to spend a morning. Taking advantage of trainers and classes offered and scheduling your workouts will keep you accountable during your stay and you may be surprised what you learn along the way.
Have fun, try new foods, and enjoy yourself while on vacation and balance those choices by maintaining your workouts and experiencing new ones too!
