November 7, 2020 by Kim Larsen Filed Under: Fitness, Yoga

Mudra of Knowledge

Gyan Mudra kimbentley

Sanskrit:
Mudra – Gesture or seal
Gyan – Deep meaning or knowledge

Learn how to practice Hasta Mudra, specifically the Gyan Mudra. The Gyan Mudra is one of the most recognized mudras in the world. This information is just a tiny glimpse into the study of mudras as discussed in the kimbentley Beginner Yoga Workshop Level II Series.

The Gyan Mudra is known to bring peace, calm, and spiritual progress as well as improve concentration and sharpen memory. This mudra also opens root chakra reducing depression and tension.

How to Practice Gyan Mudra

  • Sit in a meditative pose such as Sukasana (Easy Pose).  Gyan Mudra may also be practiced standing in Tadasana (Mountain Pose).
  • Gyan Mudra is practiced with both hands.
  • It’s important that you have a straight neutral spine while in a pose with the crown of the head reaching toward the sky.
  • Relax hands on knees.
  • Palms face up.
  • Place, not press, the tip of your index finger to the tip of the thumb.
  • Hold your three remaining fingers straight and stretched.
  • If comfortable, close down eyelids to aid in the concentration of your breath.
  • Option to chant OM with your exhale.
  • Practice this mudra for 30 seconds to create the electromagnetic circuit.
  • Your beginner’s goal is to perform the mudra for two minutes.

What is the Best Time to Practice this Mudra?
Days are busy so any time you can practice is better than not doing it at all! Mudra practice is especially beneficial during an early morning mediation.

Mudra and Your Fingers

Each finger represents an element. Fingers also represent a positive charge where your thumb represents a negative charge. Bringing your thumb to your finger(s) together to initiate the current through the body.

Thumb – Fire (Agni)
Index Finger- Air (Vayu)
Middle- Space (Akash)
Ring Finger- Earth (Prithvi)
Pinky Ginger-
Water (Jal)

I hope you enjoy practicing this mudra!
