Whether you run year round or you’re just beginning your running program, it’s always a good idea to keep those feet happy. Here are six tips to help you keep your feet happy and your runs on track.
Six Steps to Happier Feet While Running
- Be fitted for the proper shoe. Choosing the correct shoe may sound simple but many people wear the wrong shoe for their workout. There are many variables to consider when choosing the proper shoe, your size and how you land on your foot are just a couple. What is my best tip for a good fit? Don’t wear shoes that are too small! Your feet will swell during a hot run, and you’ll regret wearing a shoe that is too snug.
- Friction control. Friction control products such as Gold Bond Friction Defense and Glide can help prevent chafing and blisters.
- Orthotics and shoe inserts. Orthotics are available almost everywhere and a variety of price ranges. Find one that suits your needs whether it’s for arch support, extra cushioning on the entire footbed or in specific areas. If you have specific injuries or concerns such as plantar fasciitis, consult a podiatrist, you may need a custom orthotic.
- Massage those muscles! A foam roller or The Stick showed in the video work well to release tight muscles in the calf. Massage and stretching are key ways to help prevent and release tight muscles.
- Blister Prevention. Wearing the proper shoe size and appropriate socks will help you avoid blisters. If you have a chronic problem, you may want to consider toe caps to protect your toe from chafing against your shoe or other toes. My favorite of the moment is Pro-tec Athletics.
- Blister relief. One of my favorite products to use, when I would have a blister, is Band-Aid Brand for blisters. These cushioned band-aids are also medicated to help that blister heal faster.
